When you honor knowers, you honor answers. When you honor learners, you honor questions. Knowers value being right. Learners value being curious. Knowers are often quick to come up with answers. Learners may take their time to find the right questions or identify the true problem. As a child, I grew up in a family system that valued \u2018knowers\u2019. I quickly became silent, discouraged, and less confident not only at home but also at school. Many of my childhood classrooms and adult work environments honored \u2018knowers\u2019. When I finally reached a work environment that created a culture for \u2018learners\u2019 to thrive, I also began to grow and thrive. <a href=\"https:\/\/brenebrown.com\/blog\/2020\/02\/13\/the-courage-to-not-know\/#close-popup\">Bren\u00e9 Brown<\/a> describes being a learner as having the courage \u2018not to know.&#8217; Which culture are you promoting?\u00a0These are just some ways you might be creating a culture that values \u2018knowers\u2019 or \u2018learners\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td><strong>Knowers<\/strong>, do you&#8230;<\/td><td><strong>Learners<\/strong>, do you&#8230;<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>\u2022Fire questions and expect quick responses? (playing rapid-fire games that give praise to the first correct response)?<br>\u2022Give directions once and reward those who \u2018get it\u2019 quickly?<br>\u2022Move quickly through content, expecting your students\/team members to figure it out or keep up?<\/td><td>\u2022Ask questions and allow think time and response time?<br>\u2022Encourage your team\/students to ask clarifying questions?<br>\u2022Deliver content in a variety of ways in order to meet the varying learning styles of your team or classroom?<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>So, what\u2019s the problem with creating and elevating \u2018knowers\u2019?<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/brenebrown.com\/blog\/2020\/02\/13\/the-courage-to-not-know\/#close-popup\">Bren\u00e9 Brown<\/a> describes the problem well. When you invest in being a \u2018knower,\u2019 you always need to be right. You may become defensive. It becomes unpleasant to be around a \u2018knower\u2019 and it can lead to distrust, bad decision-making processes, and conflict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What\u2019s the advantage of building a team of learners?<\/strong> When you build a team of learners, you are cultivating individuals who are not afraid to ask questions, make mistakes, and learn.
